Thinking of getting a new stove? Here’s a friendly heads‑up from your local sweep
If you’re planning to have a new stove fitted any time from 1st January 2022 onwards, there are some updated rules you’ll want to be aware of. Nothing scary — just the government tightening things up to make sure new appliances burn cleaner and more efficiently.
The main thing to look out for is whether the stove is EcoDesign Ready. The easiest way to know for certain is to choose one with the SIA EcoDesign Ready label. When you see that badge, it means the stove has been properly tested in an independent test centre, and the results have been checked and verified by HETAS, the governing body for solid fuel appliances. In short, it’s been through the proper channels and you can trust what you’re buying.
Now, you can still buy a stove that doesn’t have the SIA label but claims to be EcoDesign Ready. There’s nothing wrong with that in itself, but it’s worth being aware of what that actually means. Without the SIA approval, the manufacturer is essentially saying, “Trust us — we’ve tested it ourselves.” Some may well be absolutely fine, but you don’t get the same independent proof that it meets the new standards. It’s a bit like buying a car that’s “probably passed its MOT” but hasn’t actually been to the test centre yet.
As someone who sees all sorts of stoves out on the job, my only aim here is to help you make an informed choice. A properly approved stove tends to give you fewer headaches down the line — better performance, cleaner burning, and less chance of paperwork issues if you ever need to show compliance for insurance or building control.
If you’d like to read more about what EcoDesign involves or check which stoves are officially approved, the SIA website has plenty of clear, helpful information.

A little bit about us at ProSweep Devon — and why our advice is always free and pressure‑free
At ProSweep, we like to keep things honest and straightforward. We’re chimney sweeps — not stove salespeople — so you’ll never get any sales talk or gentle nudging toward buying something. That’s simply not what we do. Our job is to look after your chimney, your flue, and your safety, and to give you clear, friendly advice whenever you need it.
We’re fully approved by Devon Trading Standards Buy With Confidence, which means we’ve been properly vetted for professionalism, reliability, and good old‑fashioned customer care. We cover a wide area including Newton Abbot, Torquay, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Bovey Tracey, Chagford and surrounding towns and villages.Including The Teign Valley .
A big part of our service is helping people understand their stoves, flues, and options. Sometimes that means explaining new regulations, sometimes it’s helping you make sense of what a manufacturer claims, and sometimes it’s simply reassuring you that what you’ve got is working just fine. Whatever the question, the advice is always free, friendly, and without any hidden agenda. We don’t sell appliances, we don’t earn commission, and we don’t benefit from steering you one way or another — so you can trust that what we tell you is genuinely in your best interest.
