Why we always smoke test as standard
Sometimes we notice that Chimney Sweep companies offer smoke testing as a somewhat optional extra to their service, and this always comes as a surprise to us as we very much consider it an integral part of the work we do. Before we go on, let us explain what a smoke test consists of, it sounds complicated but, it is very easy and simple to do.
To perform a smoke test, we basically pop some smoke generating pellets in your fireplace or stove ensuring that all windows and doors are closed; we then go outside to observe the smoke leaving your chimney using binoculars. At this point we are checking that everything is clear and working as it should be.
By not undertaking the test we could not be sure that any harmful carbon monoxide is properly leaving your chimney and therefore it increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It is simply not possible to guess that the chimney is functioning as it should and as such, if your certificate does not contain that a smoke test has taken place it may not be accepted by some insurance companies which can also lead to problems for homeowners.
