Whilst you enjoy the holiday spirit, it’s essential to prioritize your safety, especially when enjoying the warmth & coziness of your stove or open fire. Here are six Father Christmas-savvy tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas:

Clear the Surroundings: Keep the fireplace area free from flammable materials. Ensure that Christmas cards, tinsel, or any paper products are far away from the fire. A single spark could ignite such materials, so maintain a safe zone around the fireplace.

Supervision for Safety: While wood-burning stoves are generally safe, it’s wise to supervise children and vulnerable adults around the fire. Enjoy the warmth responsibly, and ensure that someone responsible is present when the fire is lit.

Burn Dry Wood: Use only dry wood with a moisture content of 20% or less. Burning wet wood is less efficient and more costly, since you are producing steam before heat. Optimize heat efficiency by burning dry wood at a higher rate.

Avoid Slumber burning: Contrary to an old wives’ tale, avoid allowing wood to burn slowly or smoulder overnight. Burning wood at a high rate maximizes heat efficiency and reduces the release of pollutants into the atmosphere.

Chimney Safety: Use your stove fire only if the chimney has been properly swept by your chimney sweep. A well-maintained chimney reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and uncontrolled chimney fires.

Be Prepared: Familiarize yourself with fire risk plans. Ensure that everyone in your home knows what to do in the event of any fire. Test smoke alarms and CO detectors regularly, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and plan an escape route if needed.
